Definition	(-CH2CHOH-)n Polyvinyl Alcohol, also know as PVA, is a water soluble synthetic polymer made by alcoholysis of polyvinyl acetate. The properties depend on the degree of polymerization and the percentage of alcoholysis, both of which are controllable in processing. Water solubility increases as molecular weight decreases; strength, elongation, tear resistance, and flexibility improve with increasing molecular weight. PVA has high impermeability to gases, is unaffected by oils, greases and petroleum hydrocarbons. However, it it attacked by acids and alkalies
